Fire drama at Shrewsbury golf course as 10 tonnes of straw set alight
Smoke was sent billowing across a golf course after 10 tonnes of straw caught fire.
The blaze started in the straw near the fifth hole of Meole Brace Golf Course in Shrewsbury yesterday afternoon.
It is understood the fire broke out at about 1pm in a tip area near the edge of the course, which is off Hazeldine Way to the south of the town centre.
John Palmer, spokesman for Shropshire Council which owns the course, said: "Everything was business as usual. The staff at the golf course didn't even know any details of the incident, aside from a few passing comments from members. So it wasn't very serious and didn't affect the club at all."
Two fire crews from Shrewsbury dealt with the blaze, which was out by 3.45pm.
A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Approximately 20 large bales of straw were involved in the fire. Crews used two hose reel jets and were dragging out the bales and damping down."
He added: "We don't know what caused the fire."
