The raid was carried out this morning at in Singleton, Madeley, where a single cannabis plant was found by officers.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and taken to Malinsgate Police Station for questioning.

Police Sergeant, Darren Stacey of West Mercia Police said: "During recent months there has been some confusion in the press about police not prosecuting minor offenders growing small quantities of cannabis.

"We want to put out a clear message that cannabis is a controlled substance. Possessing, supplying, dealing and growing it are all illegal, regardless of the quantity.

"The serious offenders who grow or supply cannabis can make huge amounts of money. These funds are often used to finance organised crime and even terrorism. There are also links to people trafficking and immigration offences.

"Whether you are growing one plant or one hundred plants, we will arrest you and we will prosecute you."

Anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour is asked to call police on 101.
