Jailed: Shrewsbury man sexually assaulted woman as she slept
A young mother was indecently assaulted at her Shrewsbury home as she lay asleep on the settee by a man who was a guest at the house, a court heard.
One of the victim's children was in the room at the time of the incident which happened more than a year ago.
Mark Simpson, 28, of Whitchurch Road, Shrewsbury, was jailed for five years and seven months after admitting the offence.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, read a statement to Shrewsbury Crown Court on Friday about the effects of the assault on her life.
She said that her life had been "turned upside down" and this had happened in her home and had done this without her consent. It had made her feel "sick and dirty" and she had been shaken and scared.
Judge Jonathan Gosling said Simpson had taken advantage of the victim while she was asleep and the assault had left her distressed and caused her serious pain.
Simpson will be on the sex offenders' register for life and was made subject of an indefinite restraining order not to have any contact with the victim.
Miss Sally Hancox, prosecuting, said that on February 9 last year the woman had been unwell when Simpson was at her house and she had gone to lie down.
She said the victim woke in excruciating pain and found that her trousers and underwear had been removed while she slept.
Mr Philip Clemo, for Simpson, said his client accepted it was a very serious offence and had heard, in moving terms, the effect on the victim. He said Simpson was very remorseful for his actions.
