Work on the new 1,745 sq metre Aldi in Newport will officially open next Thursday, August 27, after nine months of building work.

The store has been built on the former Focus DIY site in Audley Avenue, which was demolished so work could start on the supermarket.

Aldi revealed this month that it intends to build 130 new stores in a £600m UK expansion. It will see the number of stores almost double from 560 to 1,000, creating 8,000 new jobs.

The store in Newport will create 40 jobs and the chain is still recruiting an assistant store manager, six store assistants and five stock assistants.

Store manager Tom Cooke will be tempting new shoppers in on the first day with bacon butties and the promise of 100 'golden tickets'.

He said: "It is an important event for Newport and we're sure people will enjoy our grand opening celebrations. We aim to make it a bit of fun."

Aldi plans to to build up to six more new stores across Shropshire as part of its expansion nationally. It says it wants to create on the new stores in the south of Telford.

The budget supermarket overtook Waitrose in April as the UK's sixth-biggest supermarket, with 5.3 per cent of the market share.

Following the opening of the Newport store just off the A41, the branch in Oswestry is set to open in December.

In Telford, Aldi has stores in Wellington, Madeley, Snedshill and Donnington, as well as stores in Arlington Way, Shrewsbury, Stourbridge Road, Bridgnorth, and Oswald Road, Oswestry.
