Woman killed in Wigan horror crash believed to be from Welshpool

A 19-year-old woman believed to be from the Welshpool area has been killed in a horror crash in Wigan.

The serious crash on Central Park Way, was between a Ford Focus ST – which was overtaking another car – which ploughed head on into a black Peugeot 206 at around 9.15pm on Sunday.

The teenager was travelling as a passenger in the Peugeot was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

The 27-year-old male driver of the Peugeot from Greater Manchester sustained serious head injuries and is said to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The 38-year-old Ford Focus driver, who is from Wigan, was initially arrested at the scene before being allowed to be treated in hospital for serious injuries to his arm and body, including a fractured pelvis.

He was travelling with a 27-year-old woman who also suffered a fractured pelvis and remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Debris was scattered over a wide area and the road was sealed off for several hours as investigators studied the scene.

The crash is the second of a serious nature on Central Park Way in recent weeks, a biker having been left fighting for his life after a collision with a car on July 14.

PC Paul Hailwood of the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the young woman who tragically died as a result of this collision. We have got specially trained officers providing them with support at this heart-breaking time."
