M54 facing overnight disruption as carriageway work carried out

Motorists using the M54 are facing more misery as further night-time closures have come into force.

The motorway will be closed westbound between Junction 6 for Telford West and Junction 7 for Wellington from 8pm until 6am until Sunday. The closures started on Monday and also affects the Junction 6 slip road. Diversions are in place.

But the night closures on the eastbound carriageway between the same junctions were lifted this morning.

The closures are in force so Highways England can carry out resurfacing work without causing too much disruption to motorists. The agency is spending £4.2 million on resurfacing the A5 and M54 in Shropshire.

The westbound stretch of the M54 and A5 between Junction 6 and the Preston Boats island on the outskirts of Shrewsbury was closed to traffic on Tuesday night.

Alistair Harris, spokesman for Highways England said: "The reason we close the roads over night is so we can carry out the work with as little disruption as possible to road users.

"We have put in diversions around the road works, so if people are travelling at night they will be able to follow them.

"It also makes it safer for the workers on the road if there is less traffic, so if people see cones and no workers it's because it is taking place overnight.

"However we do ask people to bear with us while the work is carried out as we are making the roads better for its users. We would also like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the roadworks this week."

There will also be further lane closures between Junction 3 for Albrighton and Junction 5 for Telford while final repairs are carried out.

The work, which started in November, brought in speed restrictions and night-time closures between the junctions until last month.

Mr Harris added: "The improvements we carried out between Junctions 3 and 5 has been very successful and we have even had road users contact us to say how much better the new road is.

"Although the main work is completed we still have a few minor bits of work that need carrying out."
