Shropshire rescue dog wins award

A former rescue dog who now gets involved in fundraisers to help other canines has repaid her owner's kindness by winning a dog show.

Ellie the Schnauzer was rescued by Carole and Charles Roberts from a life as a breeding dog.

Her days changed from non-stop pregnancy and birth to becoming a much loved pet at the couple's home in Knockin.

Now Ellie is also the proud winner of a fun dog show held at the Cremorne Gardens in Ellesmere.

The event was organised by the Hector's Greyhound Rescue charity, which had a section of classes just for greyhounds and another second for other breeds of dog.

Mrs Roberts, who runs the dog friendly cafe at the Oswestry Visitor and Exhibition Centre, said she entered Ellie into the dog show to help the greyhound charity.

"Ellie is our fourth rescue dog and we have seen how their lives can be changed," she said.

"We are keen to help organisations that help all rescue dogs."

She said that she also enjoyed taking part in charity dog walks with Ellie and her other dog, a Westie called Alice.

The pair are often seen at the heritage centre cafe, where dogs are treated as VIPs.

Before their human owners are served, Mrs Roberts ensures that the visiting pooches are given their own bowl of water and a free doggy treat.

Mrs Roberts said that she would like to see more places become dog friendly across Shropshire.

"None of our customers have every complained that we have dogs in the cafe. In fact they say that it makes them smile," she added.
