The remains of an adult male were found last Thursday by maintenance workers at Junction 4 of the M54 eastbound near Shifnal and Priorslee in Telford.

Today West Mercia Police spokeswoman Sarah-Jayne Lynch said: "Police are carrying out further forensic enquiries to identify the remains.

"A post mortem was carried out yesterday but the findings were inconclusive. Further enquiries will continue to be carried out to identify the remains and establish the cause of death.

"The skull was found by maintenance workers conducting a survey of the embankment. Following further examinations and excavations further skeletal remains were found close by.

"It was established that the remains were that of an unknown male and were likely to have been at the scene in excess of two years.

"Specialist police search officers and forensic officers were involved in enquiries at the scene, supported by forensic experts in archaeology and anthropology. A thorough search was carried out over four days, finishing on Sunday."

Detective Sergeant Paul Hopwood said " We are still open minded as to how this individual happened to be at this location, and we are continuing to pursue a number of enquiries to identify the man and establish what has happened.

"Further forensic enquiries will take a number of weeks, but we will continue to keep the public updated on any developments."
