Park and ride brings £20,000 into Bridgnorth

Around 3,000 passengers are expected to have taken part in Bridgnorth's free park and ride scheme by the time it comes to an end next month.

The trial scheme, which was launched in April, has been hailed a resounding success, with organisers claiming it has brought more than £20,000 worth of business into the town.

The service will not run on August 29 and September 12 because Nock Deighton, which allows the scheme to use its auction yard car park, will be holding sales.

The free service has been financed by businesses and Bridgnorth Chamber of Commerce, and runs until the end of September.

It runs on Saturdays, starting at 9:30am from the livestock market auction site in Tasley, with the last bus leaving from outside Sainsbury's in the town at 4pm.

Chamber member Deanna Deighton said: "By the end of September approximately 3,000 passengers will have been transported into town.

"If half of them spend £15 in town, and that's a conservative estimate, that's £22,500 for the Bridgnorth economy."

Mrs Deighton added that between 70 and 80 per cent of passengers the chamber had spoken to said they would not have come into town if they hadn't seen the free park and ride signs.
