Shropshire mini-gardener Harris's 10ft sunflowers

Summer may have been disappointing so far, but for one young lad the sun is always shining.

Four-year-old Harris Thompson planted some sunflower seeds earlier this year and has watched them shoot up to tower above him. The seeds were planted in early July, tended carefully and have now reached a height of nearly 10ft.

Harris's mum, Kirsty Stevens, 45, said her son has been fascinated to see how high the plant would grow.

"It probably helped that the seeds were planted in a south-facing garden and picked up what limited sunshine we have had this summer," she said.

"My son loves to be in the garden and we thought we would try some sunflower seeds, just to see how well they would grow. Myself, Harris and my partner Matt went for a holiday in Scotland a few weeks ago and before we went the sunflower hadn't opened.

"While we were away Harris kept asking if the sunflower would be open by the time we got back and when we returned home it was – he was so excited to see it in bloom."

Kirsty, a landscape gardener from Clun Road, Craven Arms, said that her son has always enjoyed being in the garden.

She said: "Harris loves to see all the fruit and vegetables we grow. He loves raspberries and this summer has also spent time picking peas too. We have a long garden with a vegetable patch and also keep some chickens, Harris calls that area his farm."
