New push to recruit on-call firefighters in Shropshire
A campaign to recruit more on-call firefighters from under-represented groups living in the county has been launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
A recruitment day will be held at Wellington Fire Station, in Haybridge Road, for men and women from all ethnic backgrounds on September 12 between 9.30am and noon.
Visitors will be able to talk to firefighters, tour the station and watch demonstrations of equipment and hear about the recruitment process and career information.
The chief fire officer, John Redmond, said: "We are doing this because we are an inclusive service and we want to encourage a wide range of people as possible to consider a career as a firefighter.
"Being a firefighter today is much more than just putting out fires.
"Community Fire Safety, water rescue, first aid and learning how to use a wide range of sophisticated equipment is just part of the role of a firefighter."
On-call firefighters must live or work within five minutes of a fire station and are needed to turn out for a set number of hours each week to answer 999 calls and attend weekly drill sessions.
Laura Kavanagh-Jones, of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Being an on-call firefighter means you are helping to keep your community safe.
"We want men and women to come along to this taster day to find out what is involved."
The brigade provides full training, support, promotion opportunities, excellent pay, uniform and conditions of service.
