Watch: Gold medal success for Shropshire para-archer John
When he lost partial use of his legs and right arm in a motorbike accident four years ago, John Walker decided he needed a challenge to help his recovery.
And while watching the London 2012 Paralympics, Mr Walker came across American sports star Matt Stutzman, who, despite being born without arms, has become a top archer.
"I decided that if Matt Stutzman in Team USA could do so well at archery, why couldn't I do that?" said Mr Walker, of Newport.
And four years after his devastating accident, Mr Walker has become one of the world's top para-archers.
Last weekend he won gold and silver at the World Archery Para Championships in Donaueschingen, Germany.
And next week he will fly to Rio to take part in another championship.
Yet in 2012 he found himself in hospital for two months following the devastating motorbike accident in Norfolk.
The 40-year-old then spent a further 10 months recovering at the home of his partner, Margaret Harris, which he rarely left.
It was while he was recovering that he started watching the London 2012 Paralympics, where he became fixated with archery and eventually decided to give it a try – finding that it came naturally to him.
"I then started training and as I was in the Armed Forces, I discovered I had quite a good shot, although it is very different shooting an arrow compared to a rifle," he said. "Margaret and I then designed some equipment for me so I was able to take part in the sport. I competed in Germany over the weekend where I took home gold for the mixed doubles round with Jo Frith, and then I took home silver in my individual category.
"It was a shock, I think I was expected to do well, but I wasn't expecting to do as well as I did."
Mr Walker trains at the Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre, where they have a special set up for archery.
