Blow for crafty Newport shoppers in bollards sneak

Crafty shoppers driving to and from Newport's new supermarket are playing a game of cat and mouse with traffic bollards that only open at certain times of the day.

Customers visiting the new Aldi supermarket are supposed to drive in from the A41 Newport bypass.

There is another, quicker route down Audley Avenue – but this is only open to public service buses and school buses visiting Burton Borough School.

During the day Audley Avenue is closed off by traffic bollards, which drop at certain times to let buses through.

However, some car drivers are now waiting for the buses to come so they can sneak through behind them.

Residents along Audley Avenue have complained to Telford & Wrekin Council, which said it is trying to resolve the problem.

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "We are aware of the issue and we are amending the times within which the bollards will operate.

"The bollards will not function for anyone outside of the following windows of time, between 8.15am and 9.15am and 2.30pm until 4pm.

"It is intended that only school-related vehicles and public service vehicles will gain access through the rising bollards during those time slots."
