West Mercia Police said officers in Oswestry entered a house in the town through a first floor window to come to the man's aid after the alarm was raised by a nurse.
Sergeant Lee Johnson, of Oswestry Police, said: "Officers were called to assist a nurse gain entry into a home in the town.
"We used a ladder to enter the first floor of the home."
The man was recovering from spinal surgery and found himself unable to get downstairs to answer the door.
Officers and the nurse at the scene said the man was "safe and well" otherwise.
