Road closures for pedestrian work in Wellington

Roads closures will be put in place while work is carried out to improve pedestrian access in Wellington.

The work on Market Street in Wellington has started and will take about six weeks to complete, but Telford & Wrekin Council said the road closures were unavoidable.

The road will be closed to traffic between Station Road and the Post Office in Market Street, although pedestrian access immediately in front of some businesses will be available throughout the works.

The work is being carried out following a public consultation, which was held in October last year.

Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for transport, said: "We would like to apologise for the inconvenience and disruption that this work will cause but ultimately it will deliver a much improved pedestrian access to Market Street, which is what the people of Wellington said they wanted in last year's public consultation."

In order to minimise the impact on the local area and businesses, the council is looking at a series of measures to allow access and deliveries.

These include reversing the one way order on Queen Street between Church Street and Ten Tree Croft - this will allow vehicles delivering to Church Street businesses to turn down Queen Street and rejoin the ring road via Charlton Street.

Parking on Queen Street will be maintained as far as possible, although it may be necessary to suspend a small number of bays to facilitate turning movements from Church Street.

The council will also suspend the one way system between Wilkinson's car park and the Spiceland restaurant on Market Street - this will be combined with allowing access for delivery vehicles only.

An area for turning will be kept clear to allow delivery vehicles to turn in the road alongside Spiceland.

Where possible, parking on the northern side of Market Street will be retained. However, this will be reviewed to ensure the safe operation of Market Street.
