The house, on a country road through the small village of Risbury, near Leominster, was evacuated and taped off after the grenade was discovered during the house clearance. Holly Claydon-Bevan, speaking for West Mercia Police, said the police were called immediately after the discovery at about 9.20am yesterday.

An area of about 25 metres around the house was cordoned off. She said: "Bomb disposal experts from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene, and confirmed the grenade was empty. It has been removed from the property and the area has been made safe."

The cordon was only in place briefly, she said, as the grenade was quickly assessed not to be live.

The EOD Regiment has sub units geographically based throughout the UK to provide a nationwide high readiness response capability in support of the police.
