Video and pictures: Hole in the wall! Hay falls off trailer damaging front of Ellesmere house
Bales of hay crashed off a trailer into a house when a tractor tried to negotiate a mini-roundabout.
The hay caused severe damage to the house in Scotland Street in Ellesmere on Sunday when the tractor towing the trailer tipped shortly before noon.
Hay bales fell from the vehicle, which was coming from the direction of the Mere, and hit the house, damaging one of the windows, the guttering and leaving a hole in the outside wall.
A police spokeswoman said: "Scaffolding has been put up around the house and the council now has to perform a structural inspection to ascertain the full level of damage caused.
"Scotland Street was closed at 1pm and part of it remains closed now, as we seek to keep pedestrians and cars away from the damage."
Ellesmere Town Council mayor Ian Ward said: "It is not something I am aware has happened before.
"I have seen the damage and it is quite considerable – it has knocked the wall and window of the first floor in. It must have been quite a significant weight that hit the side of the house.
"They have closed the road for a short while to make the building safe because there has obviously been falling masonry and so on. I was told there was a risk of injury if there were falling bits from the house so they would have to make sure it was safe.
"I think it is very fortunate no-one has been seriously injured or hurt."
"It is not a particularly narrow road - it is an A-road through the town.
"I think the driver must have been going towards Oswestry and swung and tipped and hit the front of the house.
"It is a shame, and it is dangerous so I believe they will make sure the area is safe."
