Adrian Colin Webb pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared before magistrates at Telford.

Mrs Abigail Hall, prosecuting, said that a member of the public had alerted police to an accident after they saw a motorbike collide with a bollard at the top of King Street, Dawley, Telford, on August 20. She said that a witness had seen the bike being "ridden erratically" and swerving to avoid parked cars.

When officers attended they found the rider still pushing his Honda motorbike up the hill on the footpath.

Webb, aged 53, refused treatment by paramedics saying that he had no injuries, the court was told.

Police officers described Webb as smelling of alcohol and unsteady on his feet and the defendant failed a roadside breath test, said Mrs Hall.

Webb, of Central Avenue, Bilston, later told officers that he had been drinking during a visit to his mother-in-law. He recorded a reading of 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35.

Magistrates gave him a 12-month community order with 60 hours' unpaid work and banned him from driving for 23 months. He was told to pay £295 costs.

Webb, who had no previous convictions, was not represented in court on Monday. He apologised and said the drinking had been "stupid".
