Pair risk lives clambering over Wem railway crossing

Two pedestrians risked their lives by clambering over the barrier at a county railway level crossing after a technical hitch saw it shut for an hour.

The pair were seen yesterday during another problem with the automated level crossing at Wem, which has suffered a number of signal or electrical faults.

Melanie Benbow, who set up the Wem Train Station Safer Group said: "I'm still unsure why the barriers were already down at around 7.30am. But it led to two fools deciding to dangerously jump the barriers as they were late for work.

"This obviously is not how to use the crossings safely and could have led to serious problems should one of them been in collision with an oncoming train.

"Hopefully, the CCTV has seen this and found who they are to deal with them accordingly."
