Action call on 'botched' resurfacing in Welshpool
Residents of two housing estates have called for action to be taken after a "botched" resurfacing job.
People living in Borfa Green and Coed-y-Brenin in Welshpool say they want Powys County Council to re-do the work, claiming it has been "done on the cheap."
Contractors working for the council carried out asphalt coating on the estates last week and then left the job unfinished, it has been claimed.
And now councillors and homeowners are have described the asphalt as "unsuitable."
Councillor Graham Breeze told Welshpool Town Council's planning committee that residents were right to complain.
"The resurfacing job has been completely botched and is little more than a bad paint job. It is totally unsuitable," he said.
"This is nothing more than Powys County Council cutting costs. But it is very poor economics because the surface is already coming off and will need replacing before the winter is over.
"I have spoken to Councillor Barry Thomas, the leader of Powys County Council and he has promised to look into the matter. I know he is going to be shocked when he sees the job that has been done."
The town council planning committee voted to demand a site meeting with Powys road engineers to discuss the situation.
Town Clerk Robert Robinson showed councillors images of the resurfacing work.
"The asphalt replacement is totally unsuitable," he said. "For a start it is not recommended for use on steep banks like Borfa Green and is already coming up in chunks."
Resident Ray Goodwin said: "I am appalled that Powys County Council has not carried out the work to the same standards as it did in Cobden Street and Westwood Park." Another homeowner, Jeff Hill, said: "It is shocking. You can't just lay this type of surface onto already damaged roads."
Powys County Council said contractors will be returning to the site early next week.
