The Black Bear in Whitchurch is one of a select few which have been listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2016.

CAMRA branch members chose the Black Bear following regular visits to check on the quality of its real ales on offer.

They also looked at customer service, decor and overall atmosphere.

Mark Sumner, landlord of the pub, said it was great news.

He said: "It is a nice feeling and we are really proud to be recognised.

"It is quite an accolade. This is the fourth year we have been selected for the good beer guide, out of a total five years we have been here. I think we have been selected for keeping the quality of the beer up.

"There are six ales that rotate – and out of those three are normally local.

"Occasionally we also hold mini beer festivals when we go to places and source ales from smaller breweries."

Other pubs selected by the branch were The White Hart in Ellesmere, The Horse and Jockey in Grindley Brook, near Whitchurch, The Black Lion and The Oak in Oswestry, and The Red Castle in Harmer Hill, north of Shrewsbury.
