The incident in the Saville Close area of Wellington happened while the grandmother was taking care of her 15-month-old grandchild.

Firefighters had to help the grandparent after she was locked out of the house with her grandchild inside shortly before 2.15pm on Thursday.

They were able to get into the house within 10 minutes.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager John Pritchard said: "The child had shut the door while his grandmother took out the rubbish while she was looking after him.

"The frustrating thing for her was the baby was standing by the window watching us all while this was going on."

Mr Pritchard said a passer-by called the fire service, as the grandmother did not have a phone with her at the time.

Mr Pritchard said after the grandmother's initial panic, the baby and grandmother were "fine".
