Fears Newport faces losing police presence
Police officers in Newport could be moved elsewhere due to the lack of crimes reported, it is feared.
Officers could be pulled out of Newport and sent to other parts of Telford & Wrekin because people were not reporting crimes, councillors have warned.
This comes following the 2013 closure of the police station on Wellington Road after 40 years.
Officers are currently based at Donnington Police Station, about five miles away.
Councillor Tony Forrester, chairman of the community support group, said people need to start reporting any minor offences.
He said: "Because people don't want to bother the police, or don't think it's worth calling them, a lot of issues go unreported.
"Due to this Newport is now a low-crime zone, meaning we could face policing cuts for the town and surrounding areas. No matter how small you think the crime is, people must report it by calling 101.
"Even if it some fly tipping and they are told it's a council issue, it still gets recorded so we can keep our police officers in the town.
"Residents are always complaining about boy racers on Stafford Street car park but the police have not received a single report.
"Issues cannot be dealt with if people do not report them, and we could risk losing our resources to other parts of Telford if people don't report things."
Since 2013 police bases at Albrighton, Cleobury Mortimer, Craven Arms, Ellesmere, Newport, Much Wenlock and Shifnal have either been sold off or leased out.
This has saved West Mercia Police nearly £1 million, it was previously reported.
