Greggs to open new branch on Telford industrial estate

Bakery chain Greggs has received permission to open a branch on one of Telford's industrial estates.

While the Stafford Park estate is a major hub for industry in the town, it is poorly served for amenities, and workers on the site have few options when grabbing a bite to eat at lunchtime.

Now Greggs has secured planning permission to convert a former carpet warehouse and sales room into a bakery on Stafford Park 4.

The new outlet will bring between six and nine new jobs to the estate.

"Many business and industrial locations tend to be served poorly in terms of formal, accessible and affordable food and drink retail provision and this is the case at Stafford Park Industrial Estate," said a statement accompanying the planning application.

"The proposed bakery will sell baked goods, pastries, cakes, sandwiches and confectionary to serve the surrounding industrial estate and its visitors."

Nearby businesses whose staff will be in strolling distance from the bakery include vehicle rental business Enterprise, hire company HSS, and confectionary business Magna.

"The introduction of Greggs bakery provides a complementary function to the existing employment uses, reduces unsustainable car journeys and generates between six and nine new jobs," the statement added.

"Furthermore, the limited scale of the bakery and its catchment ensures that impact is localised and designated centres are not materially harmed. It will evidently primarily serve the working population of the industrial estate."

The application has now been granted full planning permission.

Greggs currently runs a total of 1,668 outlets around the country, and has recently been looking at opening on business parks which are similarly detached from local amenities, citing an example in Exeter to planners.
