Around 500 people took part in a rally calling for the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre to be kept in the town centre.

Led by the Cannock Highland Pipe Band, participants made their way from the top of Pride Hill before finishing up outside the Quarry Pool on Saturday.

Armed with placards and whistles and chanting "save our pool", the town centre was turned into a carnival-type atmosphere.

The rally, which was organised by the Quarry Forum, was held as consultation continues over the future of the Quarry centre which could see it moved to a new site on the edge of the town.

Swimming pool users and town centre businesses were among the people to take part in the rally, which has been hailed a success by organisers.

Alison McKittrick, spokeswoman from the forum, said: "We are here today to raise awareness we want to keep the pool in the centre of town.

"To keep it where it is makes sense in terms of access and economic benefits to the town.

"The turnout was fantastic and the support shows that there is definitely a strong local feeling for keeping the pool in the town centre.

"We believe that public support shows we can really make a difference.

"I want to thank the mayor for coming and thank the town council for the support they have given us."
