Luke Roberts, 20, was attacked as he was leaving Pussycats nightclub in Wellington, Telford, with his sister, who was left with lacerations to her face.

Mr Roberts, a Stirchley and Brookside parish councillor, and his sister, from Horsehay, were then taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, where he is in a coma in intensive care.

The assault happened near Pussycats and the Belmont Community Hall, on Tan Bank in Wellington, just after 12.30am on Sunday.

Mr Roberts' other sister Shannon, who was not involved, today appealed for witnesses to come forward to help catch her brother's attackers, who drove off in a grey car.

The 19-year-old, from Saint Clears, Carmarthenshire in Wales, said she believed the attackers did not know her brother and that it was a "mindless" random attack.

"I just don't understand why anyone would do something like this to him," she said. "Luke is such a well loved member of the community as he does so much for so many people.

"After the attack I put an appeal on Facebook and that has been shared over 1,200 times, which just shows how loved he is.

"Luke wasn't looking for trouble that night, he was out with our sister, and when it happened they were leaving Pussycats to go home.

"So many people have contacted me who were there and they have all said it was a random attack."

"Everyone has said that a man and woman got out of a grey car, and then attacked them both, before getting back in the car and driving off.

"As a family we are finding it really hard, as he is not in a good way at the moment, he is currently in a coma in intensive care in hospital.

"We are just urging anyone who saw the attack to contact the police so we can catch the people responsible for such a mindless and pointless attack."

Mr Roberts has been a member of Stirchley and Brookside Parish Council since June, and in that role has set up a group for youngsters and adults.

Councillor Jackie Loveridge, chairman of the parish council, said: "Luke has worked very hard for the young people of Stirchley and Brookside setting up a charity Youth of Today, Adults of Tomorrow and he is a respected and valued member of the parish council.

"We are all devastated to hear the news of this violent and senseless attack on Luke and his sister. Our thoughts are with Luke's family.

"We would urge anyone with any information to contact the police."

The former builder has also raised money to improve Stirchley's skate park and children's play area, as well as repainting fences.

Police spokeswoman Terri-Anne Powell, of West Mercia Police, said officers were called just after 12.30am on Sunday following reports of a man and a woman being assaulted.

The male attacker has been described as early 20s of mixed raced, wearing a hat and all in black – although his top featured white lettering. The woman is described as "quite big in size", with red or pink hair pushed back into a bun.

Pussycats Nightclub has also posted an appeal on Facebook asking for people to contact police with any information, which has been shared almost 300 times.

Witnesses should call police on 101, quoting incident number 32S of Sunday, October 18. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org
