Motorists and pedestrians were forced to do a double take when they spotted the sci-fi movie baddies guarding a post box on Abbey Foregate in Shrewsbury.

But it turned out postmistress Caroline Lewis had actually invited the two Stormtroppers from a galaxy far away to mark the release of the specially commissioned stamps, which were released by Royal Mail.

The 18 first class stamps all feature scenes or characters from the Star Wars movies, including Yoda, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The seventh film in the Star Wars franchise, The Force Awakens, will receive a world premiere in Los Angeles on December 14 ahead of a UK release on December 18.

Caroline said: "It seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. I mean, who doesn't love a Stormtrooper?"

Gwyneth Williams, 85, of Monkmoor said: "I think it was a brilliant idea and certainly something that made me smile."
