Spencer Whalen, 37, of Ellesmere, has produced a three-minute video showing salmon jumping over the weir as the fish take part in their annual migration to lakes and streams further up the River Severn.

The footage, slowed down to a tenth of normal speed, shows salmon appearing almost suspended in mid air or performing a supercharged "Fosbury Flop" on their way over the weir.

Mr Whalen said that the original idea for the film had been inspired by two men he met while out shooting footage at the River Dee, Overton.

He said: "I have lived here all my life and I never knew salmon went jumping over the weir.

"I got the idea when I was up at Overton at the River Dee and there were these two old guys picking sloe berries and they said I should go and have a look at the salmon on the weir.

"I thought it would just be one or two throughout the day if I was lucky so I put it off for a couple of weeks then went down and they were going crazy."

Mr Whalen said he had only realised how good the footage was when he got home.

He said: "It happened so quickly I did not really know if I had great shots, at the time it was just a blur on the camera."

Mr Whalen said that he has a passion for capturing video of nature, and wants to showcase the hidden beauty of Shropshire.

He said: "I am just really into our landscape because a lot of Shropshire is really hidden from the world.

"I am just trying to document it as best I can so I can show people what is happening."
