Lewis Phillips, 23, admitted using threatening, abusive and insulting words and behaviour with the intent to cause fear or provoke violence when he appeared before magistrates in Telford yesterday.

Phillips, of Church Road in Trench, was given a two-year conditional discharge for the offence. Mr Chris Coughlan, prosecuting, said the incident had taken place at Raja's in Newport's High Street on April 11.

"A comment was made by somebody. This man lost his temper and started assaulting people," said Mr Coughlan.

"For his efforts he got punched himself a few times, but he started it," he added.

The prosecutor described a scene of "shouting, screaming, punching and general disorder".

Miss Kate Scully, for Phillips, said the defendant was a man of previous good character with no previous convictions. She said Phillips had been drinking all day before the incident occurred.

Phillips was also ordered to pay £135 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
