Inquest opens after Telford bus death

An inquest of a pensioner who died after a bus braked sharply was taking place today.

Joseph James Stockton, known as Jim, was travelling on an Arriva bus through Sutton Hill, Telford, when two children ran into the road causing the driver to brake quickly.

The inquest into Mr Stockton, from Sutton Hill, was opened by Shropshire coroner John Ellery at Shirehall in Shrewsbury on September 16.

Coroner's officer Michael Homden said the retired engineer was on an Arriva bus on September 3. As it was approaching a bus stop, Mr Stockton got up.

The 92-year-old fell and fractured his neck. He died two days later at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. The inquest was being held at Wellington Civic Centre this morning.

Mr Stockton's family issued a tribute to the pensioner, who was was formerly from Wolverhampton.

It said: "Jim was the father of Sue and Mike, grandfather of Robin, Richard and Philip, and great-grandfather of Bella.

"He will be greatly missed by all of his family, their partners and many friends."

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call 101, quoting incident number 358s.
