HSBC has announced the closure of its third Shropshire branch in the space of two weeks.

The bank has revealed it will be closing the Harlescott Cattle Market branch in Shrewsbury because of a fall in the number of customers using it. The branch will close in the new year.

It comes after the bank announced it will close branches in Market Drayton and Whitchurch – also because of what HSBC says are falling numbers of people using the services. The Harlescott Cattle Market branch is one of three banks – along with Lloyds and Barclays – in a row of business premises on Harlescott Lane close to the Tesco Extra supermarket.

It will close on January 22, although the company stressed there will be no job losses with all members of staff offered positions at other local branches.

Steve Gracey, the company's senior media relations manager, said: "The branch has been affected by the increase in popularity of online and telephone banking resulting in a reduction in usage of the branch."
