Video: World record Welsh cake in Mid Wales

It's taken over a year to confirm, but a Mid Wales town has been named the record holder for producing the world's largest Welsh cake by officials from the Guinness Book of World Records.

Weighing in at an impressive 26kg, the giant Welsh cake was baked in July 2014 at Llanidloes Charter Market to celebrate the market's birthday.

The whopping Welsh cake was baked in the Community Gardens then carried through to the busy main street. A certificate confirming the achievement was finally received by the committee this week.

"After a long wait, we are delighted to finally be told that Llanidloes is now a world record holder," said market manager Dave Cannon.

The idea came from Mr Cannon as a means of celebrating the 734th birthday of the Charter Market.

"We wanted a unique and quirky way to raise money for the Air Ambulance and promoting the town", said Trudy Davies of Woosnam and Davies Newsagents.

All ingredients were donated by the Llanidloes Co-op, and the supersized baking pans were created by Chameleon Engineering. The event was recorded by local film maker Matthew Davies and sent to Guinness in support of the world record breaking bid.
