Man arrested on suspicion of Newport rape bailed

A man has been released on police bail after he was arrested on suspicion of rape in Newport.

The 20-year-old man, from Telford was arrested in connection with the rape of a woman in Newport on Sunday.

The alleged rape happened at about 3.30am on the High Street near Boots.

The alleyway leading from the Hight Street to Waitrose was sealed off for most of Sunday morning while police officers investigated the area.

Connie Osborne, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: "Officers were called to High Street, in Newport, at 3.34am on Sunday.

"An investigation is currently ongoing.

"A 20-year-old man from Telford has been arrested on suspicion of rape, but he has been bailed until December 9."
