Shropshire prepares for flooding as relentless rain leads to warnings across county
Shropshire is bracing itself for flooding after several days of torrential rain across the border and Wales.
Flood barriers are going up in Shrewsbury and people in the Melverley area have been told to expect fields and low lying roads to flood as Shropshire braced itself for high river levels following heavy rain across Wales.
The environment agency issued flood warnings - where flooding is expected - for the River Vyrnwy at Melverley and Maesbrook and lesser, flood alerts, for the Severn Vyrnwy confluence and the River Severn across Shropshire.
Alerts are also in place for the Severn and Vyrnwy in Powys.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "Heavy and persistent rainfall is expected to affect parts of Shropshire and North Herefordshire Saturday and into Sunday bringing a risk of river flooding and localised surface water flooding for some areas.
"The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation closely and will issue flood alerts and warnings as required.
"We have teams out on the ground, clearing blockages in rivers and culverts.
"The demountable barriers will be deployed at Frankwell in Shropshire Sunday 15, in the morning, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely."
