More cafes and a theatre coming to Telford's Southwater complex

Plans to build even more cafes and restaurants, as well as a theatre, at the new Southwater complex in Telford look set to be given the go-ahead.

The plans would see the current Meeting Point House extended, with a new two-storey building.

The new building would then be turned into meeting rooms, a theatre, restaurants and cafes.

This comes after it was announced last month that TGI Fridays will be taking up one of the new units at the £200 million development's new Southern Quarter complex.

Work is due to start on the new complex soon, with the restaurants set to open at the end of 2016.

The plans for the extension have been put together by Telford & Wrekin Council and will go before planning committee tomorrow.

In the report, planning officer for the council, Steven Drury, said: "The application seeks full planning permission for the erection of a two-storey extension to the front of Meeting Point House, in Telford Town Centre.

"The proposed building will contain three units on the ground floor, which will be used as cafes and restaurants.

"The first-floor space will be mixed use, including meeting rooms and theatre.

"Outside seating will also be provided along the front of the elevation."

He added: "The proposed uses will contribute to the aim of providing an evening and night time economy within the town centre through the provision of cultural and leisure uses.

"The building will be provided in an easily accessible location, close to public car parks and a range of sustainable transport links.

"Based on these conclusions, it is recommended that the committee grant planning permission."

The extension will be built on the grassed area outside the current building towards the north west corner of the complex.

Local and national charities are already based in the building, including the district office of Age UK, Healthwatch and homeless charity Stay Telford.

Bosses at Meeting Point House are looking to hear people's ideas about how it can serve the needs of the town at a meeting on Thursday and November 28 from 12.30pm until 1.30pm.

Andy Smith, chair of the Meeting Point House said: "We want to hear from all ages, ethnicity, and other voluntary groups as to how Meeting Point House can use the meeting rooms, conference rooms, reception and cafe.

"We're aware of the additional pressures community groups are under for additional facilities and so these consultation days are an opportunity for people to come along and let us know."

The planning committee meeting will take place tomorrow at The Whitehouse Hotel in Wellington at 6pm.
