Liam Baker, nine, had his head shaved in front of his fellow pupils from St Matthew's CE Primary School in Donnington Wood during assembly for Macmillan's Brave the Shave campaign.

So far he has raised £195 for his hair-oic deed.

Mum Ruth during her cancer treatment

His mum, Ruth, 47, said: "I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer two years ago and after a full hysterectomy, I had to go through a gruelling course of chemotherapy, which caused me to lose all my hair and I had to wear either a scarf or a wig.

"I tried not to let it get me down and Macmillan were a great help, even if it was only with the books they published that help with eating and exercise during chemotherapy, and your rights at work.

"I am now being monitored, but all seems OK at the moment.

"Liam has been growing the top of his hair for quite a while, he has a quiffy bit on the top.

"He was looking at growing it to have it cut to make wigs for children who have cancer but we looked into it and we saw you had to grow it to 12 inches and I thought that might be a bit much.

"He turned round to me and said 'Mum, I'll just do Brave the Shave, no problem.'

"He hadn't had any worries until the morning before when he said he was a bit nervous.

"As soon as it was over he had to run off and look into a mirror, he said it feels really funny. I'm very proud of him," she added.

Liam was taking part in Macmillan's Brave the Shave campaign, which sees men and women of all ages shave off their hair to raise money for the cancer charity and stand with those who have lost their hair while undergoing treatment.
