There's a spider in my grapes! Surprise find in supermarket snack

A mother was left shocked when she found a spider in a packet of grapes she bought from a supermarket.

Kim Richards only noticed the creepy-crawly after her eldest son had eaten a handful of the fruit.

The family, from Ketley, Telford, bought the grapes from Tesco on the Wrekin Retail Park as a snack for her young sons Callum, 10, Jamie, six and Shane, two.

They had been in the fridge for a week before they decided to open them.

Mrs Richards said: "They decided they wanted some grapes.

"My eldest son took a handful up to bed with him and as he went he said 'Mum you should eat some grapes, they are good for you.'

"But when I looked in the packet there was all white inside from the web and I could see the spider.

"I hate spiders. I took a picture straight away and sent it to my mum who put it on Twitter to show Tesco. We took it back to the shop. I've never seen anything like it in fruit.

"It was all white from the web and there was some papery stuff which I think it must have come out of. When I bought them I noticed there was some white stuff in the box but I thought it was just that coating that grapes sometimes have.

"I can't believe it has survived a week in the fridge. It had wrapped itself up in its web, like cocooned itself."

Kim's mother Mary Powell sent Tesco a picture of the spider via Twitter and the company has now said it will look into the problem and get back to both her and her daughter with the findings.

Stuart Muir, supermarket spokesman, said: "We sell more than one million bunches of grapes every week, and our growers work hard to clean and inspect all the fruit carefully, however, as the produce is so fresh instances like this do happen on very rare occasions.

"We've apologised to Mrs Powell and will update her on the findings of our supplier investigation."
