The Shropshire-based former WBC super-middleweight champion said all toys donated to the appeal, organised by the Star and Storage King, would make a big difference to hundreds of children across the county.

He said: "If you can help, then anything you can give will be gratefully received by the children.

"There are a lot of kids who will go without this Christmas, and anything you can give will make a real difference to them."

We are asking people to bring in brand-new toys and games to our collection points across the county, which will be distributed to youngsters with serious illnesses, disabilities or other difficulties.

Telford & Wrekin Council has also opened a collection point at the Southwater One complex in the town centre.

The building is home to the town's library, the council's customer services department and several charities, as well as the University Centre Telford. The collections point is located on the first floor, near to the library.

The gifts will be shared between seven groups. Hope House Children's Hospices, The Harry Johnson Trust, Climbing Out and Parents Opening Doors are the charities which will benefit.

Other toys will be sent to Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals, in addition to children's services at Shrewsbury and Telford & Wrekin councils.

Toys can be handed in at any of the following collection points: Telford – Shropshire Star, Ketley Business Park, Waterloo Road; Southwater One, first floor; Shrewsbury – Shropshire Star, 7 Bellstone; Storage King, Archers Way, Battlefield Enterprise Park; Toys R Us, Meole Brace Retail Park; Oswestry – Shropshire Star, Salop Road.
