Andrew David Miles, 36, of The Smithfields, took the money to fund his gambling habit, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard.

Judge Peter Barrie jailed Miles for 15 months after the defendant admitted fraud – acquiring £5,000 by deception in 2009, the theft of £2,300 in January 2015 and fraud, obtaining £1,900 in January 2015.

Mr Richard Russell, prosecuting, said that Miles's mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and by January this year was in the advanced stages of the disease.

Her daughter went to her house to sort out some finances and discovered several discrepancies.

These, Mr Russell said, included a subscription to the Racing Post which she cancelled.

She then discovered that £5,000 had been fraudulently removed from her mother's account in 2009 and that several large sums of money between £200 and £500 had been taken from her bank more recently.

A bill of £1,900 had also been paid to a betting firm from the mother's credit card.

Mr Dean Easthope for Miles said that his client had used the money to fund his gambling addiction.

He said Miles would lose his job if he was given a jail sentence.
