The homes, which are being built off Coppice Green Lane by Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes Mercia, will see developers giving £1.7 million to community projects.

Barratt Homes is building 146 homes on its development Honeysuckle Grange, while David Wilson Mercia is building 54 new properties on neighbouring Coppice Meadows.

The funding has been provided as part of the house builders' planning agreements for their new sites with Shropshire Council.

Adrian Farr, managing director at Barratt Homes West Midlands said: "Community investment is one of the most important aspects of any new housing scheme.

"To that end, we aim to contribute a great deal to the local community as our Honeysuckle Grange development progresses and hope our contributions will go onto have a positive impact on the lives of people living in the area."

Both Barratt Homes and David Wilson Mercia have contributed £500,000 towards highways improvements in Shifnal.

A further £981,000 has been provided under the Community Infrastructure Levy to carry out infrastructure improvements in the town.

The developers will also be providing a public open space with play equipment, which will cost in the region of £250,000.

John Fitzgerald, managing director at David Wilson Homes Mercia said: "As well as building new homes at Coppice Meadows we will also be investing in the area and this means the benefits of the development will be experienced throughout the community.

"We are delighted work is now under way and look forward to welcoming our first residents next year."

Planning permission for the development was granted in May, construction work got under way in June and the first homes are expected to be completed by spring 2016.
