Shropshire Council has offered the freehold for the civic centre to Whitchurch Town Council.

It comes ahead of a public meeting in the town next week where residents will be asked to give their views on the building's future.

No decision will be made by the town council on whether to take up the offer until after people have had their say at the meeting on December 3.

For a number of years Whitchurch Town Council has leased the building from Shropshire Council at a rent of £1 a year.

Stephen Platt, clerk of the town council, said: "There are potentially two offers on the table – one being that Whitchurch Town Council takes on the freehold of the civic centre or simply continue with the leasehold. Either option affects how we operate within the building going forward."

Whitchurch Civic Centre was reopened by North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson on May 9, 2014, after having a £800,000 refurbishment.

At the time the project was criticised after it fell more than eight weeks behind schedule and £120,000 over budget.
