Major changes to train services in Shropshire and Mid Wales

Major changes will be made to train timetables in Shropshire and Mid Wales. Arriva Trains Wales said changes will be introduced from December 13.

They include one Sunday morning service being replaced by a bus.

Changes featured in the new timetables have been made in response to customer and stakeholder feedback and essential improvement work requirements in consultation with the Welsh Government, Network Rail and other groups, Arriva said.

Due to essential Network Rail work over the winter, the current 8.30am Sunday service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth will be replaced by a bus service.

The 9.51am Sunday service from Birmingham New Street to Shrewsbury will be extended to Aberystwyth, leaving Shrewsbury at 11.28am.

On the Heart of Wales line, the current 5.40am Monday to Friday Shrewsbury to Cardiff Central service will now start at 5.56am.

In response to a request from local stakeholders the 4.50pm Monday to Friday service from Holyhead to Cardiff Central will call additionally at Church Stretton and Craven Arms.

Lynne Milligan, customer services director said: "For the new timetable we have listened to our customers and stakeholders and have provided, where possible, additional services or stops for communities where our train service provides a vital connection for both work and leisure activities.

"We have also worked closely with Network Rail, who are currently implementing a programme of essential improvement works and investment across our network.

"We have recently relaunched a new easy to use online journey check service in addition to our Arriva Trains Wales app, making it easier to plan and check journeys.

"We are urging all customers to check their journeys before they travel, to check for planned Network Rail improvement works and also for unforeseeable delays that sometimes occur on our network."

Customers are advised to check if their travel plans will be affected by the changes before commencing their journey.

Posters highlighting alterations will be on display at the relevant stations or visit and information can be found on the rail provider's website including downloadable versions of the new timetables and a list of all the significant changes.
