Plans to create about 20 extra bedrooms at Cloverfields care home in Chester Road have been approved by Shropshire Council using delegated powers.

As part of the two-storey extension scheme, the kitchen will be extended and improvements made to the car parking facilities.

Shropshire Council received no objections to the proposal, which also won the backing of Whitchurch Town Council.

Dianne Campbell, spokeswoman for the applicant Safe Harbor, said: "It will incorporate a hotel-standard refurbishment of the existing building. The extension will provide an opportunity for elderly and vulnerable people in the local vicinity.

"The proposed development will be extremely beneficial to the local economy for allowing future employment.

"It will encourage residents, their families and carers to access local shops which are on their doorstep as part of our promotion to become more fully integrated in our immediate community."

She added: "The proposed extension will allow it to extend its services and will create about 15 new positions."

A report on behalf of Shropshire Council said: "The development provides additional accommodation at an existing care home and is therefore acceptable in principle.

"The scale and design of the extension is considered to be acceptable and relates well to the existing building and site. Furthermore, the development will not adversely affect the amenities of any neighbouring property."
