The River Severn along The Wharfage was expected to rise to over 5m above its normal level, putting the town at risk of flooding.

Workers from the Environment Agency were in Ironbridge just one day after defences were put up in Shrewsbury's Frankwell car park.

Bungs have also been put in gulleys in Ironbridge to stop rising water in the drains.

In Shrewsbury the following areas have been shut by flooding: Gravel Hill Lane, Sydney Avenue, Chilton Farm Lane, Cross Houses-Atcham, Victoria Avenue, Old Coleham, plus a lane closure at Coleham Head to allow for the Severn Trent pump to be accommodated

Dave Throup, Environment Agency manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, who was on site in Shrewsbury yesterday said the river level was expected to rise by another one-and-a-half to two metres by this morning.

This morning Mr Throup tweeted:

All shops, restaurants, museums and public houses on the Wharfage and elsewhere in the Gorge will remain open for business as normal once the flood barriers have been deployed and all car parks will also remain open - though the road is closed to cars.

Across the county, the rising water has continued to cause chaos.

Particularly badly hit by Storm Clodagh has been mid-Wales, which has seen key roads and services closed due to flooding.

Llandrino Bridge and Welshpool Airport have both been closed until further notice.

Tanant Valley Coaches have made changes to a number of their bus services in the area due to the ongoing problems.

Phil Bradley, from the company, said: "Please be aware that due to the flooding over the last day or so that damage has been caused to Llandrinio Bridge.

"This has meant the immediate closure of the bridge until repairs are made, the repairs will not be evaluated until the water level has reduced."

All X71 and 71 routes to Welshpool and Newtown are normal, except that the road past Welshpool Airport is closed so the route will operate past Coedydinas as normal then back on itself to the railway station and go through the Industrial Estate past Sidoli's and onto the Leighton Road.

Service 72 is also operating as normal except that the lunchtime connection with Service 74 at Llanymynech will not take place due to the Llandrinio Bridge closure.

Emma-Jane Beattie, emergency planning duty officer for Shropshire Council, said Gravel Hill Lane and Sydney Avenue in Shrewsbury as well as Chilton Farm Lane in Atcham and the Cross Houses to Atcham road were all closed due to flooding.
