The main road between Welshpool and Shrewsbury was closed this morning after a milk tanker overturned.

The tanker caused the closure of the A458 between Buttington and Trewern near Welshpool. The road reopened early this afternoon.

Crews from Welshpool and Newtown are at the scene after the alarm was raised shortly before 12.30am.

Milk leaked from the tanker as a result of the accident.

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue spokesman said nobody was trapped, and a heavy lifting recovery vehicle was used to get the vehicle back on its wheels.

Elsewhere a three-car smash on the M54 happened at around 7.30am between Junction 3 for the A41 and Junction 2 for the A449 Stafford Road.

Eastbound traffic was diverted along the hard shoulder with both lanes closed as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Two fire engines and at least two ambulances were at the scene.

The collision took place within two miles of roadworks on the M54, where one lane of the eastbound carriageway has been closed for more than a week.

Traffic was backed up as far as the A5 as a result.
