Significant progress has been made at the school over the past year, according to a report by Ofsted inspector Mel Ford.

Governors and staff at the school in Northgate have said they are hopeful that special measures will be lifted by the end of the month. The school was put into special measures in October last year and has been inspected three times since.

The report, based on the inspection in November, states: "Having considered all the evidence I am of the opinion that at this time, leaders and managers are taking effective action towards the removal of special measures."

Teachers were praised for planning lessons well, and the rate of progress among students is improving in English and maths. GCSE and A Level results have also improved. Headteacher Phil Loveday said: "Students and staff have worked incredibly hard to turn this around."
