Man talked down by police after seven-and-a-half hours on car park roof at Telford Shopping Centre
Police negotiators talked down a man seven-and-a-half hours after he climbed to the top of a car park at the Telford Shopping Centre.
Cherry Pink multi-storey car park on St Quentin's Gate in Telford and its surrounding walk ways were closed off on Wednesday afternoon while emergency services were at the scene.
Shoppers were also not allowed to access the car park above level two or the walk-ways.
Police were alerted and sent to the scene at about 2pm along with trained negotiators.
Detective Inspector William Scott said: "At 9.30pm a 46-year-old male came down from the ledge of Cherry Pink car park and was then detained under the Mental Health Act. We would like to thank the public for their cooperation and understanding of the situation during this busy time of year."
Emily Cleland, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "I can confirm we were called just after 2pm.
"We were concerned about the welfare of a man who is currently at the top of a car park on St Quentin's Gate.
A rapid response paramedic was also called to the scene.
One shopper, who wished not to be named said: "Police blocked off the car park and walk ways around it.
"There were police everywhere and they weren't letting people past level two."
Roads around the shopping centre remained open throughout the incident, only the access to the car park was closed.
The car park is owned by Telford Shopping Centre and Chris Jones, centre director said they had worked closely with the police.
