Plan for 290 homes at Telford beauty spot rejected - for now
People power has won the day as plans to build 290 homes on a beauty spot in Telford were thrown out – for now.
More than 100 people turned out to the Whitehouse Hotel in Wellington last night to oppose the plans for land to the north of Haygate Road.
And it paid off as Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee voted unanimously to refuse the plans.
But another battle lies ahead as developer Gladman Developments has already lodged an appeal which will be heard next year.
Ward councillor Jacqui Seymour said the new homes would cause traffic chaos and labelled it a development that was "not wanted or not needed".
Others said it would result in the loss of a valuable green space and put pressure on already oversubscribed schools in the area.
The meeting heard Telford already had an adequate supply of housing land for almost the next 10 years.
John Pattinson, of the Save Haygate Fields campaign group, said: "We are very pleased the planning committee has rejected this application."
