Jailed: Telford man, 21, caused serious injury to police officer's eye
A 21-year-old Telford man who attacked a police officer, leaving him with a serious eye injury has been jailed.
Christopher Sheridan struck the officer when he was stopped from riding his bicycle in a prohibited area in Wellington.
At Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday Sheridan, who has a history of violence, was jailed for a total of 40 weeks.
Judge Peter Barrie said Sheridan had reacted to being stopped by the policeman, leaving the officer with an injury that continued to affect his career.
He said Sheridan had also been involved in a "mean theft", having stolen property from a woman who had offered him accommodation.
The court heard that Sheridan had a "long list" of convictions for assaulting people, mainly in pubs, and had been given a number of community orders.
Judge Barrie said Sheridan had failed to comply with the orders and had now "reached the end of the road".
At an earlier hearing Sheridan, of Winifreds Drive, Donnington, had pleaded guilty to assaulting Pc Bradley Milburn causing him actual bodily harm and to an offence of theft.
Miss Samantha Powis, prosecuting, said that the incident in Market Street had been caught on CCTV and showed Sheridan striking the officer. The court heard Pc Milburn suffered a cut above his eye and his eye was completely closed and there was damage to the iris.
Sheridan had also been involved in the theft of a video camera and a digital camera from Paula Keeble after she had offered the defendant shelter at her home.
Mr Danny Smith, for Sheridan, said his client had suffered from drug addiction and had learning and communication difficulties.
