The first phase of the flood barriers at Frankwell Quay went up today in reaction to heavy rain across the border in Mid Wales.

And tonight flood warnings were issued for the River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook and Melverley, with levels expected to peak at 4.4 metres tomorrow morning.

Dave Throup, Environment Agency spokesman, said: "The low level ones at Shrewsbury are going up at Frankwell, particularly in response to the rain we have had in Wales today."

Mr Throup said there are currently no plans to put up defences in Coleham or Ironbridge.
